Chief James indicated he officially started September 1, 2007. He grew up a
stutterer – and every time he is in front of a microphone he is reminded
of that because now you cannot get him away from the microphone. However, he
promised to be brief. Ironically, his office located next to where his
mother’s cousin used to own a business, so coming to <st1:place

addition, his twin brother a former Assistant Chief in Miami Dade retired to

11.0pt'>This is Fire Prevention Week which has been extended to a month to
encompass all the activities. Our fire department has many activities planned
to recognize this and make people aware of the importance of fire prevention.
In addition, they take programs into the schools and other community venues to
increase awareness. So many disasters could be averted if people just used
smoke detectors. In addition to fire prevention, the fire department includes
rescue services. They are not only offering screenings for hypertension, but
many people do not have the resources to have this problem address. They are
also looking into partnerships with other agencies to look into addressing the
hypertension once it is identified thru the screenings. The question arose
whether fire rescue respects “Do No Resuscitate” notices in homes.
Chief James indicated when they see them – absolutely. Unfortunately,
quite often they are not prominently displayed, so fire rescue resuscitates.
He was asked whether he went into the fire department directly from the
marines. He indicated he originally wanted to become a surgeon, but the
extensive education (even with the limited GI bill) was cost prohibitive;
therefore, he changed his focus. But this way he still saves lives – in
a different way.
