President Kurt Godfrey presided with expertise and expediency. Wayne Brockney
brought us up to date on our “finances.” <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>

face=Arial><span style='font-family:Arial'> told the attendees that he had 35
volunteers helping with the Delray Affair. He stated that we netted over
$4,000.00 for scholarships. On April 29, the scholarship awards will be given
to deserving graduates at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Atlantic</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">High School</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

house. Dave Harden gave a lovely invocation. “Jivin’ Jimmy”
Weatherspoon was back with us after having knee surgery last week. He is doing
quite well, and led us in some of our favorite songs. (He does need to see Dr.
Stefani for some new “Rotary” eyeglasses, however.)<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

visiting Rotarians. Dave Harden did a make up. We had five visitors of

with the three ladies. Juan Manzano, Department of Environmental Services,
Compliance Division Manager, City of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Delray
Beach</st1:City></st1:place>, was among the visitors and is looking our club
over for membership.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

“the market is down today.” At noon, the DOW was down 37 points;
the NASDAQ down 10; the S&P down 5 points. Gold was down to $915.00; Oil

gathered in a total of $315.00 today. We booed six AWOL’s. Money was
given on behalf of “Library Appreciation Month.” Dave Armstrong
read a note from Don Lerch, who sent us <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Arial'>a $100.00 donation, on behalf of his longtime friend, our

than our own favorite cheerleader, Dr. Stefani Martin, Board Certified
Optometrist. Her topic was “<i><span style='font-style:italic'>What you
can’t see can hurt you!”<o:p></o:p></span></i></span></font></p>

w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> area. She received her Bachelor of

of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Iowa</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>. She graduated
with honors from the <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">College</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Optometry</st1:PlaceName> at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Nova</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Southeastern</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. She opened
her practice, <i><span style='font-style:italic'>Ocean Optics</span></i>, on <st1:address
w:st="on"><st1:Street w:st="on">E. Atlantic Avenue</st1:Street>, <st1:City
w:st="on">Delray Beach</st1:City></st1:address>, in 2006. She and her husband
Jeremy are the proud parents of a boxer, Champ.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

care. She highly recommends seeing a Primary Care Eye Physician once yearly,
unless there are abnormalities that require care more often. If her tests
merit it, she will refer you to an Ophthalmologist for surgery. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;
font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>She warns that some eye diseases can be detected only by eye
exam. If treated early, some of the diseases can be controlled. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>She informed us that less than 46% of the population has
annual eye exams, compared to 85% having dental exams. She also stated that
children should have eye exams by 3-5 years of age. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>Dr. Martin warned that Glaucoma is a “Silent thief of
sight.” About 25% of the population suffers from this. Alan Kornblau
asked if “medicinal use of marijuana” is a help for eye disease.
Dr. Martin stated that eye drops nightly would keep glaucoma under control,
without all the “side effects.” She also stated race, genetics and
myopia all play a role in this factor. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;
font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>Dr. Martin recently gave a one-hour long lecture at our
library on the subject, expounding more on eye disease and care. The bottom
line clearly is seeing that you have your yearly eye “checkup.”
