As our beloved Ellie has moved on to other (not greener except in her thoughts) pastures, I will be taking over the Rotary Ramblings. Together with a team of able-bodied Rotarians, we will be providing the weekly updates to one and all via email. Although we will never fill Miss Ellie’s shoes, we will do our very best. The meeting was called to order by our new President, Steve Bates. Dave O’Connell led us in the invocation followed by a lively, albeit musically challenged (as we were missing our piano player) rendition of R.O.T.A.R.Y. Harvey Brown introduced our numerous visiting Rotarians, with a special welcome to a member of the Rotary Belgrano Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is the second largest club in Buenos Aires. He was originally a member of the Coral Gables club but returned home to Argentina recently. He brought greetings from Christina Dombrowski. We had 3 visiting marines, 2 recruiters and a recent graduate of marine basic training (Lori Garland’s son). Fred Bonardi gave a somewhat positive stock report as the markets were only down 17% overall, and oil was also down today more than it has been. On a negative note the bank stocks are really down as well. Tony Allerton as Sargeant-at-Arms collected $78 from a small crowd for such categories as – stock market relief fund and here’s the rain, as well as the usual scholarships. No bad considering no birthdays or anniversaries. President Steve, with the aid of his trusty right hand, Bob Teninga, handed out numerous perfect attendance pins, with the longest running going to Ernie Simons for 41 years of perfect attendance. Announcements: Dr. Stephanie Martin is continuing to collect glasses in the newly created eyeglass collection box. Who knew Bob Teninga was so artistic? Copies of the Year-End Statements and Budget are available for anyone who would like a copy – see Steve Bates. Bob Teninga introduced our speaker, Juanita Mainster, US Census Bureau, Sr. Partnership Specialist Regional Office for Florida, Alabama and Georgia. She discussed the primary purpose of the census which is to accurately account for the number of residents in the U.S. to determine representation in Congress. Additionally, the data is utilized by local and state governments in order to allocate funding for services, such as fire and police, emergency and disaster services, social services, educational requirements. It also helps business to use this data to determine products and services needed in georgraphic areas. In 2010, there will only be a short form to be completed. The Census bureau is looking for assistance from individuals and organizations to assure everyone complies with the completion of this form. By law, the Census Bureau is not permitted to share the information with any other agency, including immigration and the IRS. It is imperative we all help to assure everyone understands the obligation to complete the form. There will be an advance letter, then the questionnaire and then a reminder if it has not been returned. Finally, a person will come to your home.
